사람다운 사람이 없다

 

어느 날 주인이 이솝에게 공중목욕탕에 사람들이 얼마나 있는지 보고 오라고 했다.
목욕탕에 가보니 입구에 큰 돌이 놓여 있어
드나드는 많은 사람들이 그 돌에 걸려 넘어지곤 했다.
아무도 그 돌을 치우려 하지 않았지만,
오직 한 사람만이 나사서 그 돌을 치우는 것을 보았다.
이솝은 돌아와 주인에게 목욕탕에 사람은 단 한 명만 있다고 말했다.
주인이 직접 가서 보니 사람들이 가득차 있었다.
그래서 이솝에게 왜 거짓말을 했냐고 다그쳤다.
그러자 이솝이 대답했다.
"그 돌을 치운 사람만이 진정한 사람다운 사람이라 할 수 있지만,
나머지는 사람이라 부를 자격이 없습니다."

"The Man and the Stone"
Aesop was sent one day by his master Xanthus to see what company were at the public bath.
He saw that many who came stumbled, both going in and coming out,
over a large Stone that lay at the entrance to the bath,
and that only one person had the good sense to remove it.
He returned and told his master that there was only one man at the bath.
Xanthus accordingly went, and finding it full of people, demanded of Aesop why he had told him false.
Aesop thereupon replied that only he who had removed the Stone could be considered a man,
and that the rest were not worthy the name.
