진정한 적은 전쟁 그 자체이다(the true enemy is war itself)

 

영화 '크림슨 타이드(Crimson Tide)' 중에서

미 핵잠수함에서 핵미사일 발사를 둘러싸고 함장(진 해크먼)과 부함장(덴젤 워싱턴)의 갈등을 다룬 1995년 영화이다.

영화 초반에 함장, 부함장 두 주인공은 장교들의 식사 자리에서 전쟁의 본질을 두고 잠시 논쟁을 벌인다. 함장은 일본 히로시마 등에 핵폭탄을 투하한 것으로 화제를 열어, 뭔가 자신과 생각이 달라 보이는 부함장을 빈정거리듯 대화를 전개한다.

- 램지 함장 : 해군참모대학에서 가르치는 것은 금속공학하고 원자로지 19세기 철학이 아니지 않나. 클라우제비츠가 말했지, "전쟁은 다른 수단으로 하는 정치의 연장이다."라고.
- 헌터 부함장 : 제 생각에 클라우제비츠가 정말 말하고자 했던 것은 조금 다른...
- 램지 함장 : 복잡하다고? (동석 장교들 웃음)
- 헌터 부함장 : 네, 전쟁의 목적은 정치적 목표를 위한 수단입니다만, 전쟁의 진정한 본질은 전쟁 자체에 복무하는 것입니다.
- 램지 함장 : (웃으며) 매우 인상적인 말이네. 바꾸어 말하면 정치가들과 단절하고 적을 파괴시키는 것 외에 다른 모든 것은 잊는 군인이야말로 전쟁에서 승리할 가능성이 제일 높지. 자네도 동의할 걸세.
- 헌터 부함장 : 동의합니다. 그게 클라우제비츠가 말하고자 했던 것이겠죠.
- 램지 함장 : 하지만 자네는 그 말에 동의하지 않는다는 뜻인가?
- 헌터 부함장 : 아닙니다. 동의합니다. 다만 제가 생각하는 것은 이 핵 세상에서는 진짜 적은 파괴될 수 없다는 점입니다.
- 램지 함장 : (웃으면서 유리잔을 두드며) 다들 주목. 클라우제비츠가 우리의 진짜 적이 누구인지 말해주려고 하고 있네. (다들 웃음)
- 헌터 부함장 : 외람된 말이지만, 핵 시대에 진짜 적은 전쟁 그 자체입니다.

- Ramsey : At the Naval War College it was metallurgy and nuclear reactors, not 19th-century philosophy. "War is a continuation of politics by other means." Von Clausewitz.
- Hunter : I think, sir, that what he was actually trying to say was a little more
- Ramsey : Complicated? [Men laughing]
- Hunter : Yes the purpose of war is to serve a political end but the true nature of war is to serve itself.
- Ramsey : [Laughing] I'm very impressed. In other words, the sailor most likely to win the war is the one most willing to part company with the politicians and ignore everything except the destruction of the enemy. You'd agree with that.
- Hunter : I'd agree that, um, that's what Clausewitz was trying to say.
- Ramsey : But you wouldn't agree with it?
- Hunter : No, sir, I do not. No, I just think that in the nuclear world the true enemy can't be destroyed.
- Ramsey : [Chuckling, tapping glass] Attention on deck. Von Clausewitz will now tell us exactly who the real enemy is. [Laughing] Von? [Men laughing]
- Hunter : In my humble opinion, in the nuclear world, the true enemy is war itself.

 

귀관들 둘 모두 옳았고, 동시에 둘 다 틀렸다.
이 딜레마는 귀관들이 이 방을 떠난 후에도 오랫동안 이 위원회, 해군 및 전군에 남아있게 될 것이다.

You were both right and you were also both wrong. This is the dillemma that will occupy this panel this Navy and this country's armed forces as a whole long after you leave this room.
