경기장 내의 투사, 용기를 낸다는 건 실패를 각오하는 것이다.

경기장 내의 투사가 되라!

 

비평가의 말은 중요하지 않다.
강한 사람이 비틀거릴 때 지적하는 사람이나,
힘써 행동하는 사람에게 더 잘할 수 있어야 한다며 참견하는 사람의 말도 의미가 없다.
명예라는 건 실제로 경기장에 있는 투사에게 돌아가는 것이다.
먼지와 땀과 피로 온통 얼룩진 얼굴을 한 그 사람,
용감하게 싸우고 실패하고 다시 또 좌절하면서도 멈추지 않는 그 사람들에게 말이다.
실수와 부족함이 없는 도전이란 있을 수 없지만,
모든 것을 바쳐 실제로 혼신의 노력을 다하며,
열정과 헌신의 위대함을 알고,
가치 있는 목표를 위해 스스로를 바칠 줄 아는 사람들이기 때문이다.
그들은 결국, 최고의 경우, 위대한 성취의 승리를 누릴 것이고,
잘못되어 실패하더라도, 적어도 그 실패 속에 위대한 도전은 남을 것이니,
그의 자리는
승리도 실패도 모르는 미지근하고 겁 많은 영혼들과 함께 있지는 않을 것이다.

브레네 브라운은 루즈벨트의 말을 소개하고나서, 자신은 이렇게 깨달았다고 말했다.

"용기를 낸다는 것은 실패를 각오하는 것이다"
