스웨덴에서 있었던 일이다.
어느 대학의 경제학 교수가 말했다. 그는 한 번도 시험에서 학생을 낙제시킨 적이 없지만, 단 한 번, 전체 반을 낙제시킨 적이 있다고.

그 반의 학생들은 사회주의가 작동 가능한 제도이며, 가난한 사람도 없고, 부자도 없고, 모두 평등해야 한다고 주장했다.

교수는 말했다.
“좋다, 이 반에서 사회주의 실험을 해보자. 시험 점수를 모두 평균 내서, 모두가 같은 점수를 받게 되는 거다. 그래서 누구도 낙제하지 않고, 누구도 10점 만점을 받지 못하게 될 거다.”

첫 번째 시험이 끝난 후, 학생들의 점수를 모두 더해 학생 수로 나누었고, 모두가 8점을 받았다.
열심히 공부한 학생들은 불만이었지만, 공부 덜 한 학생들은 기뻐했다.
두 번째 시험이 닥쳐오자, 조금 공부하던 학생들은 더 덜 공부했고, 열심히 하던 학생들도 “이럴 바엔 나도 편히 가자”고 생각하여 덜 공부하게 되었다.
그 결과, 평균은 6점.

세 번째 시험에서는 평균이 4점까지 떨어졌다.
결국 모두 낙제했다.

교수는 말했다.
“사회주의는 이렇게 실패한다.
국민 절반이 ‘나는 일 안 해도 되겠네, 남이 해줄 테니’라고 생각하게 되면,
나머지 절반도 ‘왜 내가 일해야 하지?’라고 느끼며 일하지 않게 되고,
그때가 바로 한 나라가 무너지는 순간이다.”
