영국의 다양한 국가 호칭과 그 차이점

영국이라는 나라는 그를 호칭할 때 다양한 단어로 표현된다.

- 잉글랜드(England),
- 브리튼(Britain),
- 그레이트 브리튼(Great Britain),
- UK(the United Kingdom),
- 영국 제도(the British Isles)
- 영연방(Commonwealth of Nations).

이들의 차이에 대해 알아본다.

먼저 영국에는 네 가지 지역이 있다. 
- 잉글랜드
- 웨일즈 
- 스코틀랜드
- 북부 아일랜드(아일랜드의 나머지 부분은 독립국가인 아일랜드 공화국임)

이들이 여하히 조합되는가에 따라 달리 불린다.
- 잉글랜드 : 영국 본토
- 브리튼(Britain) : 잉글랜드 + 웨일즈. 본래 영국 본토가 있는 섬을 의미.
- 그레이트 브리튼(GB, Great Britain) : 잉글랜드 + 웨일즈 + 스크틀랜드. 브리튼 섬의 북부에 있는 스크틀랜드가 포함.
    1707년 스코틀랜드 합병 당시의 국호
- UK(the United Kingdom) : 잉글랜드 + 웨일즈 + 스크틀랜드 + 북부 아일랜드.
    1801년 아일랜드 섬 합병 당시 국호.
    1922년 아일랜드 공화국이 독립된 이후에 '북부 아일랜드'가 GB(Great Britain)에 추가. 
    현재 영국의 실효적 지배가 적용되는 영토임.
- 영국 제도(the British Isles) : UK와 아일랜드 공화국을 포함한 영역. 지리적인 명칭으로 사용.

영연방(Commonwealth of Nations)이라는 말도 쓰이지만, 이 말은 과거 영국의 식민지였으나 현재는 독립한 국가들을 가리키는 데 사용된다. 대부분은 완전 독립국가이다. 다만 일부 행정 영역(의사, 변호사 등)에서 영국의 체제에 따르는 나라가 있다.

Ps: Northern Ireland should not be confused with the Republic of Ireland. The latter is an independent country and its capital is Dublin.
